Making Room For The Grace of God
FALL INTO GRACE
Part 3: “Making Room for the Grace of God.”
2 Samuel 6:1-10 NLT
Moving the Ark to Jerusalem
6 Then David again gathered all the elite troops in Israel, 30,000 in all. 2 He led them to Baalah of Judah to bring back the Ark of God, which bears the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, who is enthroned between the cherubim. 3 They placed the Ark of God on a new cart and brought it from Abinadab’s house, which was on a hill. Uzzah and Ahio, Abinadab’s sons, were guiding the cart 4 that carried the Ark of God. Ahio walked in front of the Ark. 5 David and all the people of Israel were celebrating before the Lord, singing songs[d] and playing all kinds of musical instruments, lyres, harps, tambourines, castanets, and cymbals.
6 But when they arrived at the threshing floor of Nacon, the oxen stumbled, and Uzzah reached out his hand and steadied the Ark of God. 7 Then the Lord’s anger was aroused against Uzzah, and God struck him dead because of this. So Uzzah died right there beside the Ark of God.
8 David was angry because the Lord’s anger had burst out against Uzzah. He named that place Perez-uzzah (which means “to burst out against Uzzah”), as it is still called today.
9 David was now afraid of the Lord, and he asked, “How can I ever bring the Ark of the Lord back into my care?” 10 So David decided not to move the Ark of the Lord into the City of David. Instead, he took it to the house of Obed-edom of Gath.
2 Samuel 6:1–10:
David was bringing the ark to Jerusalem. The ark represented God’s covenant presence among His people. During the journey, Uzzah touched it and died. Celebration gave way to fear, and David diverted the ark to Obed-Edom’s house.
“Imagine being at home when that procession stops outside. Someone has just died. The king is afraid. And now the ark is coming to your house. You could never have planned a moment like this.”
2 Samuel 6:10-12 NLT
10 So David decided not to move the Ark of the Lord into the City of David. Instead, he took it to the house of Obed-edom of Gath. 11 The Ark of the Lord remained there in Obed-edom’s house for three months, and the Lord blessed Obed-edom and his entire household.
12 Then King David was told, “The Lord has blessed Obed-edom’s household and everything he has because of the Ark of God.” So David went there and brought the Ark of God from the house of Obed-edom to the City of David with a great celebration.
Those three verses establish the unexpected arrival, the three months, the household blessing, and the report reaching David.
1. Sometimes we experience God’s grace through an unexpected interruptions.
Scripture: 2 Samuel 6:10 NLT
The ark arrived because David’s original journey had been interrupted.
What became a pause in David’s plans became an extraordinary season for Obed-Edom’s household.
2. His household experienced the blessing of God
2 Samuel 6:11 NLT - The Ark of the Lord remained there in Obed-edom’s house for three months, and the Lord blessed Obed-edom and his entire household.
“Let the grace you receive become grace your family experiences.”
3. His blessing became a testimony beyond his home
2 Samuel 6:12 NLT - Then King David was told, “The Lord has blessed Obed-edom’s household and everything he has because of the Ark of God.” So David went there and brought the Ark of God from the house of Obed-edom to the City of David with a great celebration.
1 Chronicles 15:13–15 NLT
13 Because you Levites did not carry the Ark the first time, the anger of the Lord our God burst out against us. We failed to ask God how to move it properly.” 14 So the priests and the Levites purified themselves in order to bring the Ark of the Lord, the God of Israel, to Jerusalem. 15 Then the Levites carried the Ark of God on their shoulders with its carrying poles, just as the Lord had instructed Moses.
4. His story continued in worship and service
Scriptures: 1 Chronicles 15:18, 21, 24; 16:4–5 NLT
When the Ark of God moves to Jerusalem, Obed-Edom moves with it!
Named among those serving around the ark through music and guarding responsibilities. The story extends beyond a temporary experience of blessing into continuing service.
“The ark’s stay at his house ended, but the biblical story keeps connecting the name Obed-Edom with worship and service.”
5. Fall into grace and build a legacy of faithfulness
1 Chronicles 26:4–8 NLT - 4 The sons of Obed-edom, also gatekeepers, were Shemaiah (the oldest), Jehozabad (the second), Joah (the third), Sacar (the fourth), Nethanel (the fifth), 5 Ammiel (the sixth), Issachar (the seventh), and Peullethai (the eighth). God had richly blessed Obed-edom.
6 Obed-edom’s son Shemaiah had sons with great ability who earned positions of great authority in the clan. 7 Their names were Othni, Rephael, Obed, and Elzabad. Their relatives, Elihu and Semakiah, were also very capable men.
8 All of these descendants of Obed-edom, including their sons and grandsons, sixty-two of them in all, were very capable men, well qualified for their work.
